Apophenia - from the German "Apophänie," coined by neurologist Klaus Conrad in 1958 to describe a symptom found in the beginning stages of schizophrenia: the "unmotivated seeing of connections [with] a specific feeling of abnormal meaningfulness." It has come to be used more widely for the common tendency to unreasonably attribute meaning to imagined patterns in random information...a foundational behavior in conspiracy theories.
